Professional Certificate in Clinical Small Animal Cardiology : A Systematic Approach Module 6 · Intensive Care for Cardiac Patient
Course Speaker: Dr.Stefano Oricco
ECVIM Cardiology resident at the University of Parma
June 1-3 2027 | Manila, Philippines
Course Overview
Critically ill cardiac patients require rapid assessment, accurate diagnosis, and timely intervention to improve outcomes. As cardiovascular emergencies become increasingly common in small animal practice, veterinarians must be equipped with the knowledge and practical skills needed to manage life-threatening complications with confidence.
Module 6: Intensive Care for Cardiac Patients is a specialized three-day training course within the Professional Certificate in Clinical Small Animal Cardiology: A Systematic Approach program. Led by internationally recognized cardiologist Dr. Stefano Oricco, this module focuses on the principles and practical application of emergency and intensive care medicine for canine and feline cardiac patients.
Through a combination of lectures, case discussions, and hands-on ultrasound training, participants will develop a systematic approach to evaluating and stabilizing critically ill patients, interpreting point-of-care ultrasound findings, and managing common cardiovascular emergencies encountered in daily practice.
Understand respiratory physiology, hemodynamics, and their role in critically ill cardiac patients
Interpret acid-base and electrolyte disturbances commonly encountered in emergency and intensive care settings
Perform Focused Cardiac Ultrasound (FoCUS) and lung ultrasound examinations in emergency patients
Recognize key ultrasound patterns associated with cardiac and respiratory disease
Gain practical experience through hands-on FoCUS and lung ultrasound training
Develop treatment strategies for cardiogenic pulmonary edema and respiratory failure
Learn the fundamentals of CPAP and mechanical ventilation in cardiac critical care
Improve the management of arterial thromboembolism and cardiac arrhythmias
A major highlight of this module is the dedicated practical training session, where participants will gain hands-on experience performing lung ultrasound and Focused Cardiac Ultrasound (FoCUS). Under expert guidance, attendees will learn image acquisition techniques, pattern recognition, and clinical application of point-of-care ultrasound in emergency and intensive care environments.
